San Diego based artist Patricia McGeeney is a native of Santa Monica, California. Her natural artistic ability was realized at an early age and has become the primary focus of her life. She received her formal training at Art Center College of Design where she majored in illustration. Continued studies at the Watts Atelier provided a strong foundation in classical figure drawing and painting. Over the years she has studied with many distinguished masters, all contributing to her growth and understanding as an artist. She believes that working from life, finding the true essence of her subjects, the play of light and shadow, color harmonies and lively brushwork are all elements that ultimately make a good painting. For these reasons the freshness and immediacy of plein air painting has become another dominant area of her work. Though her paintings contain a variety of subject matter, figure and portraiture have become her areas of interest and considers herself part of a new American figurative movement, where her work is an amalgam of realism and impressionism. Great artists of the past such as early California Impressionists, Sargent, Sorolla, Klimt, Velasquez, along with many contemporary masters are constant sources of inspiration.
Patricia has participated in many regional and national exhibitions including Oil Painter’s of America’s National, Regional and National Salon Shows, Salon International, Arc Salon Finalist, California Art Club Gold Medal, American Impressionist Society and Portrait Society of America. She has professional affiliations with the Oil Painters of America Signature Member, Portrait Society of America, California Art Club Artist Member, American Impressionist Society and the American Women Artists Associate Member with Distinction.

1. Clay – Chavant Le Beau Touche. Get the regular clay, not HM (high melt).
2. Clay warming devices, a metal bucket with a clamp on heat lamp or 100 W bulb works great.
3. Tie wire.
4. Aluminum foil.
5. Scissors.
6. Favorite sculpture tools.
7. Plank of wood (pine) approximately 8″ x 8″ x 2″.
Bring as many planks as you wish…the wood is used as the base for your sculpture.
8. Plumber’s pipe, 1/2″ threaded: Bring several different lengths…up to 10″…not PVC pipe.

15. Because we concentrate on BIRDS IN FLIGHT, live models in the classroom are more distracting than useful. I will demonstrate the technique of constructing a cantilevered bird armature that can be used for many different bird species and will show you how to assemble shapes to capture the “gist” of the specific bird.
16. Bird field guides such as Peterson, Stokes, Golden, or Sibley. Sibley’s Guide to Birds (not Sibley’s Guide to Bird Life and Behavior) is best if bringing only one field guide. This popular book can usually be purchased at any bookstore.
17. Bring your laptop to the class if possible.
18. Bring your sketchbook.
