Renso, who was born and brought up in Rotterdam, The Netherlands was already drawing and painting at the tender age of four. As far back as he can remember, his sole ambition was to be an artist. It was the natural world which most excited his interest. The overriding passion of this artist is to capture the mystical resonances of nature in the wild.
In order to understand and experience these wild habitats more profoundly, he is a regular traveller to the most inspirational places on this planet. Besides wildlife, Renso’s creative juices can also be stimulated by such details as a tuft of moss, a piece of bark, or the whimsical form of a tree.

He considers it a challenge to capture the true spirit of nature and wildlife. In the composition of his paintings, this wildlife artist pays a lot of attention to accurate draughtsmanship in the representation of animals. ”The anatomy just has to be right. Then I think it’s at least as important that the painting has life. I try to inject soul into my work.”
He paints in watercolor on board. First of all, water or a light colour-wash is applied with a sponge. Once dry, this makes the paint easier to work. This technique leads to truly amazing results. In Renso’s work, the hand of the artist is instantly recognisable. His paintings richly reward multiple viewing; the artist certainly does not reveal all his secrets at a stroke. A close study of his paintings yields up some surprising discoveries.
”Like so many other artists, I have yet to paint my best work.” It is this self-criticism that spurs him on to keep tackling new subjects. Renso entertains the hope that his work as an artist will get people of all ages thinking and they will come to the realisation that the natural world must be protected.

1. Clay – Chavant Le Beau Touche. Get the regular clay, not HM (high melt).
2. Clay warming devices, a metal bucket with a clamp on heat lamp or 100 W bulb works great.
3. Tie wire.
4. Aluminum foil.

7. Plank of wood (pine) approximately 8″ x 8″ x 2″.
Bring as many planks as you wish…the wood is used as the base for your sculpture.
8. Plumber’s pipe, 1/2″ threaded: Bring several different lengths…up to 10″…not PVC pipe.

15. Because we concentrate on BIRDS IN FLIGHT, live models in the classroom are more distracting than useful. I will demonstrate the technique of constructing a cantilevered bird armature that can be used for many different bird species and will show you how to assemble shapes to capture the “gist” of the specific bird.
16. Bird field guides such as Peterson, Stokes, Golden, or Sibley. Sibley’s Guide to Birds (not Sibley’s Guide to Bird Life and Behavior) is best if bringing only one field guide. This popular book can usually be purchased at any bookstore.
17. Bring your laptop to the class if possible.
