For the past 24 years, Jeremiah D. Welsh has undertaken the full-time pursuit of mastery in low relief sculpture. Fifteen of those years (1997-2012) were spent as a relief sculptor for Matthews International Bronze, generating plastiline originals for architectural metal-casting applications.
From 2012-2015, Mr. Welsh lived in Japan where he flourished as a fine art sculptor. In January 2014, Jeremiah completed his first sculptural solo exhibition in Tokyo. Mr. Welsh was elected to the National Sculpture Society (NSS) in 2016. In the same year, his sculpture, Mayflies and Trout Rise, was awarded the Pietro and Alfrieda Montana Memorial Prize in the 83rd Annual Awards Exhibition at the Brookgreen Gardens.
In 2017, Jeremiah completed his second solo exhibition of relief sculpture in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Concurrently his sculpture, Reaction Time, The Lizard and the Roadrunner, was juried into the NSS 84th Annual Awards Exhibition.
In 2018, Jeremiah’s sculpture, Hailstorm Maelstrom, Prickly Poppy Field, was selected by jury for the NSS 85th Annual Awards Exhibition.
In 2019, Mr. Welsh’s sculpture, Northern Torsion, Pike and Bull, was juried into the 86th Annual Awards Exhibition where he was awarded the Marcel Jovine President’s Prize. This sculpture then was displayed in Manhattan at the NSS Gallery.
In 2020, Jeremiah’s sculpture, Cormorant and Moon Jellyfish, was juried into the 87th Annual Exhibition where he was presented with the Anna Hyatt Huntington Award and Brookgreen Medal. His sculpture was again displayed in Manhattan at the NSS Gallery.
In 2021, Jeremiah’s sculpture Northern Torsion, Pike and Bull, was juried into the 15th ARC Salon – where his work was honored as one of two relief sculptures, selected from 4941 entries (representing 83 countries) to become a Finalist in the Sculpture Category for this Exhibition.
Over the years, Jeremiah’s sculpture and commentary have been featured in various publications – including Western Art Collector and American Art Collector’s “Collector’s Focus – Sculpture” (2019 & 2020) as well as Fine Art Connoisseur’s special section “Today’s Masters” (2018). He has acted as a grant-funded community educator and has lectured in art educational settings in the U.S., U.K., and Japan. Jeremiah is currently represented by the Wiford Gallery in Santa Fe and by the Broadmoor Galleries in Colorado Springs.

1. Clay – Chavant Le Beau Touche. Get the regular clay, not HM (high melt).
2. Clay warming devices, a metal bucket with a clamp on heat lamp or 100 W bulb works great.
3. Tie wire.
4. Aluminum foil.
5. Scissors.
6. Favorite sculpture tools.
7. Plank of wood (pine) approximately 8″ x 8″ x 2″.
Bring as many planks as you wish…the wood is used as the base for your sculpture.
8. Plumber’s pipe, 1/2″ threaded: Bring several different lengths…up to 10″…not PVC pipe.
Plumber’s pipe T joint.
Plumber’s pipe couplers.

9. Screws and screwdriver to secure the flange to wood…this may be done before you arrive. (Place flange in the center of plank)
10. Wire cutters
11. Needle nose pliers
12. Rubber mallet.
13. Spatula

15. Because we concentrate on BIRDS IN FLIGHT, live models in the classroom are more distracting than useful. I will demonstrate the technique of constructing a cantilevered bird armature that can be used for many different bird species and will show you how to assemble shapes to capture the “gist” of the specific bird.
16. Bird field guides such as Peterson, Stokes, Golden, or Sibley. Sibley’s Guide to Birds (not Sibley’s Guide to Bird Life and Behavior) is best if bringing only one field guide. This popular book can usually be purchased at any bookstore.
17. Bring your laptop to the class if possible.
18. Bring your sketchbook.
