Acclaimed for her captivating country landscapes, Milbie Benge’s work has been called “romantic realism” as her ability to convey the beauty of nature evokes a true sense of place. From the mirrored surface of a river at sunrise to leafy country lanes and fields sparkling with wildflowers, Benge’s paintings capture a single serene moment in time.
Her painting trips have taken her to places as far away as Italy, Spain, England and Portugal as well as the nearby Hill Country in Texas.
Dreamlike….etheral….vaporous…. At first glance, Milbie Benge’s incredibly beautiful paintings seem so weightless that – like a daydream – they might disappear in the blink of an eye. So we stare – mesmerized – and the surreal become almost super-real in its clarity.
Milbie Benge was born in a migratory camp hospital near Sacramento, California. Her father, a Baptist minister and missionary, moved his family frequently as he set up churches throughout California and Texas. Milbie reveled at the rural scenery as they traveled from town to town. At a young age, she discovered she was gifted with genuine artistic ability; her beloved countryside landscapes were a favorite subject of her drawings. Milbie’s father and high school art teachers recognized her outstanding talent, and encouraged her to further develop her skills.nnAt an art academy in Texas, Milbie enjoyed experimenting with various media for her paintings: pastels, watercolors, and acrylics. But she discovered that oil paints, with their unparalleled luminosity and endless array of applicable techniques, worked best to bring her “romantic realism” landscapes to life.
In a quest to satisfy her passion for rural landscapes, Milbie has journeyed extensively throughout the United States, Europe, and the Far East, letting the light and atmosphere of her surroundings fill her soul. She then loriously recreates these scenes on canvas, so we may share in her wonder of this earth.
