Over the last 50 years of creating on canvas, Steve Weed has honed a brilliant method of capturing a subject’s essence, combining subtly tight and boldly expressive brush strokes with an expertly blended color palette. A master in oils, watercolor, and charcoal, Steve’s narrative style easily connects with the emotions, memories or imagination of the viewer; or invites them to consider the unfamiliar for themselves. Art is a universal language, and Steve’s work has been purchased by collectors from around the globe. Even President Joe Biden was recently gifted a Weed painting at the U.S. Air Force Academy graduation, commissioned by the Class of 2023 and reflecting their shared cadet Academy experience. Photos from the presentation show clearly the President’s enthusiasm for the work.
In the May/June 2023 issue of Southwest Art Magazine, Steve was featured as an “Artist to Watch”. In 2012, he made his way into the Colorado history archives when he created the “Ashes to Art” project following the infamous Waldo Canyon Fire that wiped out his Mountain Shadows neighborhood. Steve took the charcoal and ashes left in his yard and incorporated them into his paint, creating 22 paintings that were later auctioned to raise funding for the permanent fire memorial erected in the Mountain Shadows Park. The pieces from that therapeutic collection hang in private homes, corporate, and public buildings throughout Colorado Springs.
Best known for his ability to capture the nuance of human expression, Steve doesn’t shy away at all from tackling any subject matter or theme, be it western, portraiture, landscape, still life, or expressionistic, verging on abstract. Because of his expertise in illustration, there is nothing he can’t bring to life on canvas. That ability keeps him very busy in his Colorado Springs home studio and regularly commissioned.
His fan base continues to grow. He’s been repeatedly voted a Colorado Springs Reader’s Choice favorite artist in The Independent, and Gazette’s “Best of” poll over the past decade and featured in Colorado Springs Style Magazine. Steve completed his B.F.A. in Texas, under Charles Field, before studying further in Italy.
